    A Plea for Wild Philosophy.Menno van Calcar - 2023 - Teaching Philosophy 46 (3):341-366.
Teaching philosophy online in secondary schools differs from offline teaching. The explanations usually offered for this difference show the cognitivist assumptions of mainstream pre-university philosophy education, meaning that philosophy education assumes that the aim of its practice is the enhancement of internal mental abilities. This paper argues that this view of the goal of education is unwarranted and unnecessarily restrictive, and that it implies an undesirable dichotomy between learning to be competent and being competent. An alternative, based on ecological and (...)

People are not Lesser Snow Geese: On Typical Niches, Preferable Niches, and Failing Niche Construction.Menno van Calcar - forthcoming - Topoi:1-11.
The biological notion of niche construction is used to conceptualize human-environment relations outside of the biological realm. If the relations between the environmental features and an organism are modified by organismic activity, we have an instance of niche construction. When the modifications are harmful to the organism, niche construction theory speaks of negative niche construction. When applied in biology, these concepts work well. However, when applied to human life, as is commonly done outside of the biological realm, it needs refinement, (...)

Patients’ and public views and attitudes towards the sharing of health data for research: a narrative review of the empirical evidence.Shona Kalkman, Johannes van Delden, Amitava Banerjee, Benoît Tyl, Menno Mostert & Ghislaine van Thiel - 2022 - Journal of Medical Ethics 48 (1):3-13.
IntroductionInternational sharing of health data opens the door to the study of the so-called ‘Big Data’, which holds great promise for improving patient-centred care. Failure of recent data sharing initiatives indicates an urgent need to invest in societal trust in researchers and institutions. Key to an informed understanding of such a ‘social license’ is identifying the views patients and the public may hold with regard to data sharing for health research.MethodsWe performed a narrative review of the empirical evidence addressing patients’ (...)

The social licence for data-intensive health research: towards co-creation, public value and trust.Johannes J. M. van Delden, Menno Mostert, Ghislaine J. M. W. van Thiel, Shona Kalkman & Sam H. A. Muller - 2021 - BMC Medical Ethics 22 (1):1-9.
BackgroundThe rise of Big Data-driven health research challenges the assumed contribution of medical research to the public good, raising questions about whether the status of such research as a common good should be taken for granted, and how public trust can be preserved. Scandals arising out of sharing data during medical research have pointed out that going beyond the requirements of law may be necessary for sustaining trust in data-intensive health research. We propose building upon the use of a social (...)

The medial dorsal nucleus of the thalamus is not part of a hippocampal-thalamic memory system.Menno P. Witter & Ysbrand D. Van der Werf - 1999 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 22 (3):467-468.
Aggleton & Brown propose that familiarity-based recognition depends on a perirhinal-medial dorsal thalamic system. However, connections between these structures are sparse or absent. In contrast, the perirhinal cortex is connected to midline/intralaminar nuclei. In a human, a lesion in this thalamic domain, sparing the medial dorsal nucleus, impaired familiarity-based recognition while sparing recollective-based recognition. It is thus more likely that the intralaminar/midline nuclei are involved in recognition.

Responsible data sharing in international health research: a systematic review of principles and norms.Shona Kalkman, Menno Mostert, Christoph Gerlinger, Johannes J. M. van Delden & Ghislaine J. M. W. van Thiel - 2019 - BMC Medical Ethics 20 (1):21.
Large-scale linkage of international clinical datasets could lead to unique insights into disease aetiology and facilitate treatment evaluation and drug development. Hereto, multi-stakeholder consortia are currently designing several disease-specific translational research platforms to enable international health data sharing. Despite the recent adoption of the EU General Data Protection Regulation, the procedures for how to govern responsible data sharing in such projects are not at all spelled out yet. In search of a first, basic outline of an ethical governance framework, we (...)

Learning accountable governance: Challenges and perspectives for data-intensive health research networks.Ghislaine Jmw van Thiel, Thomas Schillemans, Johannes Jm van Delden, Menno Mostert & Sam Ha Muller - 2022 - Big Data and Society 9 (2).
Current challenges to sustaining public support for health data research have directed attention to the governance of data-intensive health research networks. Accountability is hailed as an important element of trustworthy governance frameworks for data-intensive health research networks. Yet the extent to which adequate accountability regimes in data-intensive health research networks are currently realized is questionable. Current governance of data-intensive health research networks is dominated by the limitations of a drawing board approach. As a way forward, we propose a stronger focus (...)

How Does It Fit? Exploring the Congruence Between Organizations and Their Corporate Social Responsibility Activities.Menno D. T. de Jong & Mark van der Meer - 2017 - Journal of Business Ethics 143 (1):71-83.
Several studies have focused on the effects of corporate social responsibility fit on external stakeholders’ evaluations of CSR activities, attitudes towards companies or brands, and behaviors. The results so far have been contradictory. A possible reason may be that the concept of CSR fit is more complicated than previously assumed. Researchers suggest that there may be different types of CSR fit, but so far no empirical research has focused on a typology of CSR fit. This study fills this gap, describing (...)

Menno ter Braak on Democracy, Populism and Fascism: Ressentiment and its Vicissitudes.Robert van Krieken - 2019 - Theory, Culture and Society 36 (3):87-103.
The concept of ressentiment is increasingly being drawn upon to analyse current political developments, but in doing so it is important to have a clear understanding of its original meaning in the work of Nietzsche and Scheler, who applied it to the inner logic of democracy, rather than political movements opposed to liberal democracy. This article introduces an important essay written in 1937, ‘National Socialism as a doctrine of rancour’, by the Dutch modernist writer, Menno ter Braak. Despite having (...)

    Reflective Equilibrium in R & D Networks.Sjoerd D. Zwart & Ibo van de Poel - 2010 - Science, Technology, and Human Values 35 (2):174-199.
In this article, we develop an approach for the moral assessment of research and development networks on the basis of the reflective equilibrium approach proposed by Rawls and Daniels. The reflective equilibrium approach aims at coherence between moral judgments, principles, and background theories. We use this approach because it takes seriously the moral judgments of the actors involved in R & D, whereas it also leaves room for critical reflection about these judgments. It is shown that two norms, namely reflective (...)

There are no moral cookbooks—no algorithms for whipping up moral confections to suit every occasion. But more modest and flexible tools might still be useful for practical ethics. One team describes how professionals can be taught to use a framework for understanding moral problems.

  30. The libertarian predicament: a plea for action theory.Niels van Miltenburg & Dawa Ometto - 2019 - Synthese 196 (1):161-178.
Libertarians in the contemporary free will debate find themselves under attack from two angles. They face the challenge of defending the necessity of indeterminism for freedom against the philosophical mainstream position of compatibilism. And second, they are increasingly forced to argue for the very possibility of indeterministic free will, in the face of the so-called luck objection. Many contemporary libertarians try to overcome the second problem by adopting the causal theory of action. We argue that this move at the same (...)

Neonatology has become one of the fields that has made clear that medical success is only rarely nonproblematic. The new technology can be a blessing for some, but it may also become a sad experience to others, with life-long repercussions. The ethical problems of neonatology transcend national boundaries. Nevertheless, there (...)

This paper asks why information should ever be expressed vaguely, re-assessing some previously proposed answers to this question and suggesting some new ones. Particular attention is paid to the benefits that vague expressions can have in situations where agreement over the meaning of an expression cannot be taken for granted. A distinction between two different versions of the above-mentioned question is advocated. The first asks why human languages contain vague expressions, the second question asks when and why a speaker should (...)
